Meet people, make new friends, and learn more about the community.
In early 2009, eight ladies new to Calaveras County set out to bring together other area newcomers with the purpose of meeting their neighbors, promoting involvement in social activities, and becoming acquainted with the activities and resources of Calaveras County. This endeavor became a reality when on March 26th, 2009, the first luncheon meeting was held with 37 ladies present. Since then, membership has sometimes reached over 100 women. Luncheon meetings are held once a month at area restaurants followed by interesting local speakers. One does not have to be a newcomer in Calaveras County to belong, which is how the club got its name: Calaveras Neighbors and Newcomers or “CNN”.
Although “CNN” is a social organization, members participate in two fundraisers a year. Over the last 12 years, this has enabled us to make charitable donations to non-profit organizations in Calaveras County of over $28,650. Some of the recipients have included the Resource Connection, Hospice, Butte Fire victims, Veterans Memorial Fund, and Common Ground Senior Services.
During these last 12 years, “CNN” activities have provided many avenues for fun and forming new friendships. In addition to the monthly luncheon meetings, “CNN” members enjoy special interest groups such as card and domino games, cooking and tea groups, a reader’s corner, and a monthly Friday night social for members and guests. Bus and carpool trips have been arranged to San Francisco, Golden Gate Fields, and area play performances. Members receive a monthly newsletter which includes a calendar of the upcoming month’s activities. Because we live in a somewhat rural area where it is not always easy to form new friendships, many members have shared what a great need “CNN” has filled for them.
